Following the successful completion of the 2019 Student Union electoral exercise, the vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, has commended the smooth electoral process while also congratulating the winners as they take a new pathway in their line of duty.
This he related to AFAS PRESS correspondent via a whatsapp interview on Sunday, 8th November, 2019.
According to the vice chancellor, he was glad the election went smoothly despite the challenges encountered and accorded a laudable effort to the electoral committee, the Prof. Ayo Ogunjuyigbe led- electronic-voting-committee and the entire school community.
“I am happy that the election went smoothly yesterday in spite of the initial hiccups. The Chairman of the University Electronic Voting Committee, Professor Ayo Ogunjuyigbe and his Technical men did a yeoman job and we are exceedingly proud of them. The transparency of the system is highly commendable. The Electoral Committee members, comprising mainly students, did a wonderful job under the chairmanship of the Deputy Registrar (Student) Alhaji Musa.
I acknowledge with thanks the oversight provided by the Dean of Students, Prof Adekeye Abiona and his Deputy, Dr Demola Lewis. The DVC Admin and DVC Academic were with me when the results were declared in real time after the conclusion of voting at the Senate Chamber at 9 pm. Many other members of staff also played supervisory roles in the election. The generality of the students, especially the candidates for the various elective positions and their supporters conducted the campaigns in a very orderly and elegant fashion which is what we expect from all UI students.
Apparently, I saw very expensive and colourful banners at many strategic positions on the Campus. We look forward to next weekend for the election into the Students’ Representative Council”.
While expressing his thoughts on the newly elected candidates, the vice chancellor, notably, attributed no familiar relationship with any of the candidates and implored others to work in unison with the new executive team .
“I do not know any of the candidates who contested yesterday. So it was the least of my worries as to who was going to win or lose. Now that the elections are over, I congratulate all those who emerged victorious and wish them a successful tour of duty while trusting that the runner-ups will cooperate with the new Executive Council in the overall interest of promoting the welfare of all students”.
