The biggest, largest and best public speaking event in any university campus has indeed kicked off in grand style with a massive spectator today, 1st of November 2017 in University of Ibadan. The venue for the event was indeed filled up to the brim as students were seen jostling for seats at the faculty of social sciences large lecture theatre, University of Ibadan.

The opening ceremony was indeed a beehive of entertaining activities as the President, Lord Tedder hall; Alo Oluwabamise opened the event with an opening prayer. Ransome Kuti Hall and the faculty of Clinical sciences had a parade to display their trophies won last year to the spectators. Furthermore, The anthology of speeches titled "lines from the font" was officially unveiled at the event with a token of N1000.


The Speech Coach, University of Ibadan in his opening remarks; Demola Lewis apologized for the choice of the venue which could not contain the large spectators, He officially declared the debate competition opened.

In the opening speech of the President, Central literary and debating society, University of Ibadan, Miss Oluwaseun she said was quite overwhelmed with the large spectators present to witness the opening ceremony, she furthermore said the theme of this year's jaw war has been titled "answers to global questions" hence the need to address plethora of issues and providing solutions to them through jaw breaking speeches to delivered by different speakers.



The Comperes, Demola Owolabi (Demo Pumpin) and Elizabeth Nwanrueze anchored the event in a very interesting manner to the admiration of the spectators. It's imperative to note that 23 constituencies comprises of 13 Faculties, 10 Halls of Residence in University of Ibadan will fight ferociously with Jaws, speaking words of fire, Ballistic logic and Blazing Delivery. The fun, the excitement, the finger tapping, the wild ovation, Jaw breaking speeches are what comprises the competition.


The Judges at the opening ceremony which was invariably the first round of the session were Dr. Francis (Department of CLA), Dr. Soji Cole (Department of theatre arts), Mrs. Stephen Adeshina (Chief Judge). The score keeper was Victor Jonathan with the Time Keeper as Ojo Aderemi. The speakers were judged on the basis of appearance, delivery, content and facts, persuasiveness, rebuttal, time management amongst others.

The first round session had a face-off between Lord Tedder Hall Vs Kuti Hall, Mellanby Hall Vs Awo, ABH Vs Sultan Bello Hall, Independence Hall Vs Idia Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall Vs Nnamdi Azikwe Hall.


At the end of the first round session, the following results were announced Tedder Hall 70.5% Vs Kuti Hall 69.5%, Mellanby Hall 62.5% Vs Awo 65%, ABH 68.6% Vs Sultan Bello Hall 71.9%, Independence Hall 66.67% Vs Idia Hall 72%, Queen Elizabeth Hall 73% Vs Nnamdi Azikwe Hall 63%.
