As Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan joined other academic institutions all over the world to celebrate the World Teachers’ Day on October 5th 2017, Stakeholders, lecturers and in-service trainees in the teaching profession have lamented bitterly about the precarious state of Nigerian teachers in the comity of teachers globally.

The 2017 World Teachers’ Day with the theme - "Teachers Image and standard of Education" was described as the most apt which takes into consideration determining the status quo of teaching profession in Nigeria and indeed it's highly imperative to establish that teachers' deserved to be celebrated for being the pivot of socio-economic development in the nation.

While celebrating the 2017 World Teachers’ Day with a massive rally round the University of Ìbàdàn community, the Deans of various faculties such as Arts, Social Sciences, Law etc, warmly received the jubilant teachers and synonymously, they all critically identified series of problems plaguing the teaching profession such as unworkable curriculum, poor remuneration among others which has served as the bane of our education standard. The celebration which started with an awareness road walk by 9am was an eventful one as staffs and students including the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Julius Ademokoya alongside dignitaries in the faculty took an awareness walk round the university community, from the Institute of African studies, which was the first place of visitation, to the faculty of the social sciences to faculty of law stopping by at faculty of science before enrouting to faculty of Arts  with the final point at the central administration building where the jubilant teachers were warmly received by the DVC, Research, innovation and strategic partnership, Prof. Nike Adeyemo.

It should be recalled that UNESCO proclaimed 5th October to be the World Teachers' Day in 1994. The World Teachers' Day (WTD) was first conceived in 1966 October 5th in a special intergovernmental conference which was convened by UNESCO in Paris France.


The Dean, Faculty of Education; Prof. Julius Ademokoya in his appreciation speech, expressed his delight and utmost satisfaction as regards the proceedings of the event, He said "Thanks a million times for your sacrifice, support and participation in today's Teachers' Day programme. You are wonderful and l feel highly delighted to know once again of your commitment to our dear Faculty and our dear teaching profession". He further expressed that the solidarity speeches from DVC (Research & lnno.) Deans of Law, Science, Arts and Faculty Officer who represented Director of Institute of African Studies re-echoed the respect and expectations which other fields and professionals have for teachers and teaching profession. While speaking on the activities of the secondary school debate session, He posited that the aspirations of various students and teachers from invited secondary schools about education as a discipline and a profession were simply thought provoking while contributions from bright minds who served as discussants at the symposium were quite engaging.
