The Chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr.Deji Omole has said that the Union has suspended its one week warning strike but may commence a total strike soon.
THE PAGE had earlier reported that the Union declared a one week warning strike to press home their demands on issues of illegal pension deductions, fractional salary payments and non-payment of supervision allowance.
In a phone call with THE PAGE correspondent on Tuesday, he had said that the decision on the next step will be decided by the congress. “The update is that for now we are still on strike. Until we meet tomorrow, we will decide”, he had said.
However, on Thursday, April 13, 2017, the Chairman had disclosed that the Union, after her congress, has decided to suspend the warning strike, even though the demands of the Union has not been met. “We have suspended our strike since yesterday after a Congress,” he said.
He added that lecturers in the institution might embark on “a full-blown strike soon especially as issues that led to the strike are still there.” Speaking on how soon the “full-blown strike” will be, he responded that Union will submit report to its national body, after which considerations and decisions will be made. “We will submit our Congress resolution to the National body today and we will tell them that the issues are still there. Then we will pick it from there but we may likely go on a total strike”, he declared.
It should be remembered that the national body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that it could embark on a strike again in July over the non-payment of N128 billion arrears of allowances by the Federal government.
