The University of Ibadan has matriculated 3,536 students at a ceremony held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 in the International Conference Centre, University Of Ibadan.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka made this revelation while giving his matriculation address to the new students.
“Those of you who have been offered admission into undergraduate programmes need to note, in this regard, that you are one of the 3,536 candidates. “
He further explained that 3,074 students were selected out of 29,002 candidates who applied through UTME and that 462 were admitted by Direct Entry out of the total 2,891 applicants.
In a document earlier obtained by THE PAGE from the management, it was stated that 441 students were admitted into the faculty of Arts, 669 for Science, 231 for Basic Medical Sciences,206 for Clinical Sciences,54 for Public Health, 32 for Dentistry, 426 for Agriculture and Forestry, 261 for The Social Sciences,489 for Education,112 for Veterinary Medicine, 360 for Technology, 77 for Pharmacy and 144 for Law.
The University also published the best six students admitted which include Akinola Aderinsola Atinuke (90.25), Oguntona Abraham Opoola (87.583), Ajagbe Adenike Oluwatosin (86.875), Njoku Adamma Chidera (86.79), Adetunji Aishat Adebukola (86.29), and Olatubosun Oladayo David (86.08), all to study Medicine and Surgery.
The Don also announced the establishment of a Career Development and Counselling Centre with Professor D. A. Adeyemo, a former Head of the Department of Guidance and Counselling as the pioneer Director.
According to him, the centre is to assist in programmes for the acquisition of soft skills that would assist in improving the employability of students graduating from the institution, including how to write a Curriculum Vitae, preparing for a job Interview and other emotional intelligence related skills.
He thereafter advised the new students saying: “I urge you to jealously guard this great privilege that you have been given to be a member of this University, which has a proven track record of and reputation for academic excellence as well as a trusted and tested solid reputation for the quality of its graduates.
“I also urge you to get involved in positive student activities that would enable you to become rounded personalities that would be found worthy in learning and character at the end of your studies and I pray that you all will succeed.”, he concluded.
The matriculation lecture was titled, “Pathway of Time” and was delivered by an alumna of the institution’s faculty of law, Chief Mrs Victoria Olufunmilayo Awomolo, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Fellow, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Nigeria
