The Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities,SSANU, chapter of the University of Ibadan has commenced an indefinite strike, to protest shortfall in the payment of salaries and allowances of their members.
This decision was reached after the Congress held by the joint union at Niser park, opposite the institution’s administrative building on Monday, March 13, 2017.
Speaking with few members of the associations after the Congress, they said that although the unions are currently on strike, members have been informed to come to work but not to work. “We are on indefinite strike, but we would only be coming to work,” one of the members who claimed anonymity said.
It should be remembered that THE PAGE had earlier reported on March 10, 2017, the management through a release signed by the Vice Chancellor and made available on the university website submitted that,
“I implore the Joint Action Congress of SSANU, NAAT& NASU to give the University management some time to address all the issues raised in the Unions’ Resolution and constructively resolve them in the best interest of all stakeholders.”
While the Vice Chancellor differed many of the matters to University Council, he also provided response to some of the requests as he declared in response to the illegal pension deduction, “The Employee’s Contributory Pension shown on pay slips is just a reflection of each member of staff’s pension contribution deducted by the Federal Government from source.
Please note that NO PENSION DEDUCTION IS EVER MADE BY THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN.” On the issue of shortfall, he also explained that “The Management of the University of Ibadan has taken positive steps to resolve the issue of short-fall in salaries by visiting Abuja on many occasions.
The office of the Accountant General of the Federation has promised that March 2017 salary will be paid in full as it was in January 2017. It has also promised to refund the short-fall in February salary with the payment of April 2017 salary.”
