In the words of Winstons Churchill "You've no enemies? Good. That means you've stood for something, sometime in your life.
The social media attack by some people in recent times has really confirmed the above words of Churchill. No one in life can do away with criticism as rightly put by Elbert Hubbard when he said " To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing. It can therefore be deduced from those words of Hubbard that no one can be free from criticism because even if you say and do nothing, you are something (a human), therefore criticism should come your way.
The questions we should ask ourselves then is, should we shun saying or doing the right thing just because we do not want to be criticised?! The answer for rational minds would be NO. Eleanor Roosevelt has said it all "Do what you feel in your heart to be right. For you'll be criticised anyway. You'll be damned if you do and damned if you don't." The Council seizes this medium to implore the generality of UItes to ask the elements behind the social media attack to state categorically what the Council has done wrong directly or indirectly against the Constitution of the Union or the Union itself.
It would amaze UItes to find out that the offences of the Council in the sight of the critics are (1) the strong stand of the Council in ensuring sanity in the polity of the Student Union, (2) the parliamentary duty of the Council in checking the excesses of the Executive, (3) the stand of the Council against the improper care of the Union property (including union funds). The Council would also like to explicitly inform all UItes that it has not in anyway erred in its duties as the Legislative Arm of UISU.
The Council has so far operated within the powers bestowed upon it by the Constitution of our Union as contained in Article XV OF UISU Constitution. It should also be noted that the resolutions of the Council are engineered by the needs of our Union and none has been a misplaced priority.
The Council also encourages all UItes to guard themselves against sentimental and emotional appeals by some people whose interests are not in the progress, development and vibrancy of the Union but only in what they can get from the Union.
In conclusion, UItes have to know that for us to have a Union that will truly foster the interests of all members, it is the collective responsibiities of all of us.
