EFIWE NEWS: African Studies Students Celebrate Black History Month In Nigeria @assanigeria


At the University of Ibadan on Thursday, the African Studies Students' Association marked the Black History Month with variety of activities including keynote lecture, film screening of Malcolm X by Spike Lee, live Jazz performance, discussions and lots more.



In his lecture, the coordinator of the Diaspora & Transnational Studies unit of the Institute of African Studies, Dr. Senayon Olaoluwa said "Black women fought so hard with different but effective strategies to fight the anti-slavery institutions but most have them have been unrecognized because of the patriarchal structure of the society".

Olaoluwa charged the students to learn more about the female activists and abolitionist especially those that are unsung heroes.


A former Nigerian Ambassador to Australia, Ayo Olukanni was at the event said religion is the main problem Africans are facing today.

The ex-envoy who is also the Vice Chairman of Environment NGO, Fight Against Desert Encroachment, FADE, said "We are too religious in Africa and this is killing our development".


Earlier, the Host of the event and Director of the Institute of African Studies, Dr. O.I Pogoson expressed his satisfaction that the students, together with their Staff Adviser, Dr. Sola Olorunyomi, were able to organize an event of such magnitude.


Dr. Pogoson said the reasons why the celebration was "For is to learn about Black history and appreciate the efforts and contributions of Black heroes across the world such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkrumah and several others".


The event was jointly organized by the African Studies Students' Association (ASSA), Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC), and Institute of French Research in Africa (IFRA).

The president of the graduate students' association, Comr. Sam Adegbola says "ASSA is open to more fruitful collaborations with student bodies, NGOs and other agencies".
