It was Martin Luther King Jnr who said that ''The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy''.
Duty demands us to appraise, encourage and re-enlighten the mass of students as regards the ongoing struggle against injustice in the University.
First, it is noteworthy that students of this University themselves listened to the media chat with the Vice Chancellor yesterday, and it is glaringly evident that he presented thwarted positions and perspectives to the current issues relating to students at hand. This is highly condemnable.
Also, without doubt, it is apparent that the management of this institution is making such attempts to weaken the ranks of students and discourage many through their perpetual and insistent closure of the University.
This attempt is to make students who are weary of this break in the academic calendar to beg for resumption, thereby giving the management an edge to give clauses to the re-opening of the University without addressing the requests made in the first place.
To this end, it is necessary to say to the entirety of Greatest Uites who are in a haste to resume that resumption of academic calendar is our right and it is inevitable. But we must give thorough and thoughtful considerations to the circumstances surrounding it, else such desire would only make a mess of the agitation and protests staged in the first instance.
We also enjoin everyone not to allow themselves to be used to cause dissension amidst students.
Our attention has also been drawn to various cowardly,dissenting and unecouraging articles written by some persons who claim to stand for Mote, yet clamouring for resumption without any iota of concern against the victimization of this fellow, a principal reason the school was unduly closed down in the first instance.
They claim Students Leaders were not meant to lead protests in the first place but should have rather gone to court. Well, we are not surprised, these individuals were the same persons who joined the protest because they wanted 2weeks off the academic calendar, but in turn groan when the break lingers more than enough.
Posterity takes note of selfishness too. Also, such positions that legal action such as going to court should have been taken instead of protest is an invalid criticism. You do not go to court without haven explored all internal remedies. The agitation and negotiations were steps in this direction.
We have also taken note of a purported ''e-bulletin'' in circulation today, Fri, May 26,2016 stating that resumption has been scheduled for June 6,2016. We enjoin everyone to disregard this publication which is unintelligibly fabricated and evidently false as it carries such intention to cause mayhem amidst students.
Resumption date shall be officially communicated to Us when decided.
While we await the decision of the University on Mote's case, electricity and water supply, and resumption date, we have our fingers crossed and keep undying strategies to ensure that our victory is certain.
Once again, disregard any post launching attacks on the Union leadership and throwing such divisive darts in the minds of students.
Like the Vice Chancellor of the University Himself said yesterday ''tough time never lasts, but tough people do'', We remain committed and undiscouraged in this struggle .
This is a moment of social change and it comes with both loyalty and betrayal. But, we have chosen to serve you loyally. We enjoin the entirety of Greatest Uites to keep the same trust.
